Draws made for Essex Senior Cup
Thursday, 01 August 2013
County Cup excitement is underway for clubs in the Essex Senior and Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League after the draws for the First and Second Rounds of the 2013/14 Essex Senior Cup supported by BBC Essex were made at the station’s Chelmsford studios on Wednesday.
Early pairings were made involving the county’s 17 clubs at Steps Five and Six of the FA National Leagues System pyramid. The eventual Round Two winners will enter the Third Round hat in October, which features the remaining sides from the Ryman Isthmian League upwards, including Colchester United, Southend United and Dagenham & Redbridge.
For six clubs the bid for 2014 success starts on or before September 7. Wivenhoe Town will travel to face Barking and there is a short trip across North Essex for Takeley, who head to Halstead Town. Elsewhere, Stansted host Senior League newcomers Ilford, who have won the competition on a record 13 occasions.
Winners from the Stansted/Ilford and Halstead/Takeley ties will compete against each other in Round Two, while the Barking/Wivenhoe victors earn the right to play Stanway Rovers away. There is a local derby element to two other fixtures, with FC Clacton welcoming Brightlingsea Regent and Great Wakering Rovers meeting Southend Manor at Burroughs Park.
Burnham Ramblers Secretary Shaun Pugh and Stanway Rovers Manager Barry Lakin assisted with the draws by pulling the respective home and away sides from the bag. Pugh is on the shortlist for a top FA Groundsman of the Year award and he was able to relax, safe in the knowledge that Burnham had a bye into Round Three.
This was as a result of their promotion to the Ryman League for the first time in the club’s history, and he explained: “This is fairly unknown territory for our club as it’s a Senior Cup Second Round draw and Ramblers aren’t in it! Preparations for Keith [Wilson] and his team are going well as we embark on our first season at this level.”
“The Senior Cup was kind to us last season as it took us to Southend United in Round Three. That was special for all concerned and, although we lost 4-2, I think that kick-started our season and we went on to win the title from there. On a personal note I’m honoured to be a contender for an FA award and I’m looking forward to visiting St George’s Park next week.”
All Second Round ties are due to be played on or before October 5, and Lakin confessed that he had a preference as to the side his Stanway team faced at that stage, adding: “I’m delighted with the home draw. We play Wivenhoe twice in the league so I’d like for us to be able to test ourselves against a different side like Barking, but the main thing is that it’s not so much travelling. We’re entering the competition to try and win it.”
