AFC WIMBLEDON are a club in demand right now. The weekend’s international break meant no Premier League or Championship fixtures, so many football fans turned their attentions to the lower divisions. Clubs outside of the Football League took the opportunity to capitalise on that with the “non-league day” initiative, trying to encourage supporters to turn out to back their local club. Happily for Terry Brown’s Dons, that coincided with them being top of the non-league pyramid. Like never before in their eight-year existence, the spotlight is being trained firmly upon them. Chairman Erik Samuelson has been at the forefront of that demand this week, with interview requests coming in from several national newspapers, as they become wise to the fact that the South London club - two points clear at the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier table after seven games - are now within sight of achieving their goal of earning a place in the Football League. “It’s not the case that I have to pinch myself about where we are because it’s not until I do an interview and talk in detail that I sit back and think ‘Wow, we’ve come a long way,’” said Samuelson. “At the moment we are a good news story and that is attractive to people. Because of our background, we have a lot of friends in the game and there are a lot of people who want us to do well. Now they can see we have a realistic chance of getting into the Football League, there is bound to be interest there. “What we must remember is it’s still very early in the season and I’m sure Terry, like Dave Anderson before him, would stress that we mustn’t pay too much attention to the league table until we’ve played 10 games."
