MILLWALL are one of a number of clubs lobbying to get more professional referees in the game.
But it is unlikely they will get any for League One games in the near future.
The Football League annual general meeting in Portugal earlier this summer debated whether there should be more than the current crop of 17 who are paid full-time to be the game’s officials.
The 50 others in the football pyramid are paid a small retainer plus the expenses for their travel to games, which can be up to 400 miles away.
The 72 Football League clubs are now pressing for more funding of professional officials.
Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler, who attended the Portugal meeting, and is a member of the FA council, said: “There is a view across many of the clubs that there should be more professional referees down to the Championship and beyond.
“There is enough money in football to fund wages for more of them. There has also been underinvestment in training for the officials. read on
