STEVE Parish is puzzled how anyone would see the compensation paid to prise Alan Pardew away from Newcastle as being too much.

The Eagles have only splashed out on two bosses since the CPFC 2010 consortium bought the club - Ian Holloway and Pardew.

George Burley, Neil Warnock and Tony Pulis were all out of work while Dougie Freedman was already on the Palace payroll.

No official figure has been confirmed by the club but reports have claimed that Newcastle chief Mike Ashley received in excess of £2million to grant permission for Pardew to head back south.

Parish said: "You always read these things that a manager isn't worth that much. For us it's proved not to be the case.

"In the Premier League you buy almost a development player for that kind of money - and this is your leader. If you haven't got the right leader in a business you are never going to succeed."
