Wilf Zaha not expected back at Palace
Monday, 14 October 2013
CRYSTAL Palace boss Ian Holloway does not expect Wilfried Zaha to be a target in January.
The England winger left Selhurst Park in a £15million deal to the Premier League champions.
But Zaha has been a notable absentee from United's line-up - so far not featuring in the league under new boss David Moyes. It was predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson who snapped him up ahead of interest from Arsenal.
It now looks likely that the wideman will be allowed to make a temporary exit in January to get first-team action that will aid the development of his game.
Palace already have two season-long loans in Jason Puncheon and Cameron Jerome - the maximum allowed in the Premier League.
Holloway said: "David Moyes has his own issues at Manchester United, so if we were to go shouting about wanting him back on loan, I don’t think we will ever get him back.
“Besides, we have options – Jason Puncheon can play either side and in the pocket as well as in central midfield.
"Yannick Bolasie is coming back and will do well. It is all about having a squad that is strong enough to make changes and sustain good performances.
“At the moment, we are not beating people. Kebe might have the chance to do that. And we know Jerome Thomas can."
Holloway says that Zaha's performances were critical in Palace's promotion in May.
He added: “Sometimes, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone – but I knew.
“If I had not done the deal the way it was done [selling Zaha to United but instantly loaned back for the remainder of the campaign], I don’t think we would have got promoted. Everyone will have their own things to say on this. But the last two games of his Palace career, he was good enough to do it almost all by himself.
“He got two goals in the last 20 minutes of the game at Brighton, after they had been so arrogant – saying ‘See you on Monday’ and stuff like that.
“And at Wembley, he was almost unmarkable. I expect him to go on and make good progress in the game."
