Park reopens after £8m refurbishment
Wednesday, 01 August 2012
SCORES of families took advantage of the hot weather during the official reopening of a park following its £8million facelift.
After months of work, Burgess Park was reopened with a day-long programme of family entertainment, sporting events and music on Saturday of last week.
The money has been spent over the past few months to create a new children’s play area, fishing lake and sports areas . During the day, youngsters pushed themselves with the Seven Sports Challenge, where they could tried out American Football, boxing, cricket, fishing and football during 15-minute taster sessions.
Small sections of the park will remain closed to the public for another few weeks, as newly planted grass seeds need to be protected.
As well as the outdoor activities, including a 5km fitness track and an over-5s playground, Chumleigh Gardens has a range of Oriental, African, Caribbean and Mediterranean flora.
The funding for the improvements was secured through a £2million grant from City Hall, with a further £4million coming from Southwark council through it’s links with the Alyesbury Estate’s community trust charity the Creation Trust. A further £2million came from direct from council funds.

I just wanted to find out why there isnt any lights, its absolutely dark, After spending so much Tax Money...There’snot one light. Is there any specific reason behind this? some floor light on the bridge like the walk bridge over the Thames river, and around the fountain. Also some street lights on the public walkways. It would be more public friendly.
